“Ten minutes of terror”: a baby victim of a huge hailstone

An extraordinary meteorological phenomenon was at the origin of a real tragedy on August 30…

Weather disaster. On August 30 in Spain, a baby aged just 20 months was hit in the head by a huge hailstone when a hailstorm hit the northeast region of the country, in Catalonia. Despite a quick transport to the hospital, the girl died on the night of August 30 to 31, as announced by the staff of the Girona hospital where she had been hospitalized. After this tragedy, a spokeswoman for the region’s city council spoke on the subject, reporting that the hailstone “fell on his heade” and that following the shock, the little girl of one and a half years “did not survive“. If the hailstorm quickly dissipated, this does not mean that the damage was not the most important, even tragic in the case of the dead baby.

“The hail only fell for ten minutes, but it was ten minutes of terror” explained the spokesperson. In addition to the very young victim who did not survive the impact of the hailstone on his head, 50 people were injured, the majority of whom had to be treated for bruises and other minor injuries. According to the Meteorological Service of Catalonia, some of the hailstones that fell had a diameter of 11 centimeters, making them the largest hailstones observed in Spain for more than 20 years. Enough to cause significant material damage to various Spanish infrastructures, as several media have pointed out. Thus in the city of La Bisbal d’Empordà which was the most affected, all the stained glass windows of a church were shattered by the projectiles which rained down from the sky.

Broken windshields

On the car side, almost all the windshields have been smashed by small balls of ice caused by storm and storm. According to the words of a resident of the city interviewed by our colleagues from France info, “We fix it, so that if it rains again, the water or something else can’t get in.”. Because after the extreme heat of this summer, thunderstorms and strong storms have multiplied on the European continent, underlining once again the clearly visible consequences of global warming.
