GRANDSTAND – Bernd Reichart, CEO of A22 Sports Management, the promoter of the European Football Superleague, campaigns for the end of UEFA’s monopoly on competitions and demands the freedom of clubs to offer better “open”, “meritocratic” competition , from 60 to 80 clubs to make it the “best in the world” and the “most exciting”.

European football is on the edge of the abyss. Huge imbalances have appeared on the continent and clubs with a prestigious European tradition are no longer able to compete. Clubs have racked up billions in losses, many of which are the result of out-of-control spending. To stay afloat, clubs in Spain and France have mortgaged their future by selling their TV rights for 50 years (and beyond) and it looks like more will follow.

Last October, we started an open dialogue on the future of European club football. Since then, we have spoken to nearly 50 European clubs and other football stakeholders and the vast majority of them agree: the very foundations of European football are under threat. It’s time to change things.

Clubs bear all the entrepreneurial risk but too often sit on the sidelines when key decisions are made even as they see their sporting and financial foundations…
