Ten-year study – feminicide: every third crime scene is in Vienna

It is believed that 27 women have been murdered in Austria this year to date. The results of a ten-year study that has now been carried out are also shocking: According to this, every third crime scene is in Vienna, and both the perpetrators and victims are mostly under 39 years of age. Nine out of ten suspects are male, and one in three does not have Austrian citizenship.

“Violence against women is still a sad reality. The last few days have shown that too, ”said Minister for Women Susanne Raab (ÖVP) opening the press conference on the violence protection summit on Thursday, during which the results of the long-term study were presented. According to the results of the study, 33.2 percent of the murders were committed in Vienna, 19.6 percent in Lower Austria and 12.0 percent in Styria. 90.5 percent of the suspects are men. 44.1 percent of the murder suspects are between 18 and 39 years old. 67.7 percent are Austrian citizens, 32.3 percent have another citizenship. The study was carried out between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2020. 777 cases were investigated – 319 of them were feminicides and 458 were attempted murders Most cases were registered in 2019, and a total of 111 cases were investigated that year. In 2019 there were 43 feminicides and 68 attempted murders. 39.1 percent of the victims are between 18 and 39 years old, and almost eight percent were even minors. 71.4 percent of the victims are Austrians. More than 80 percent of the victims knew the perpetrator, over 60 percent were even in a family relationship. “Better to dial too many emergency calls” Together with Raab, Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) emphasized the importance of prevention work at the press conference. “From a police point of view, one thing is important: We are still not involved enough,” Nehammer appealed to those affected, “It’s better to dial the emergency number too much than too little”.
