Tenet: Box offices in the US only ring softly

Only 20 million dollars were raised on the starting weekend for the blockbuster "Tenet" in the USA. Warner Bros. expected it.

Despite the corona crisis, great hopes were made for Christopher Nolan's (50, "Inception") science fiction epic "Tenet". It is the first blockbuster to be seen on the big screen since the outbreak of the pandemic. However, the box office results give little cause for celebration. In the USA, of all places, the film has brought in only 20.2 million US dollars (the equivalent of around 17 million euros) at the box office since its launch eight days ago.

As the US industry journal "Variety" reports, this corresponds to the expectations of the Warner Bros. studio, which produced "Tenet". "We are in unknown territory, so any comparison with the world before Covid-19 would be unfair and without a basis," the company said.

Production cost of $ 200 million

The production costs of "Tenet" will amount to 200 million US dollars (approx. 168 million euros). According to "Variety", the blockbuster at the international box office is approaching at least the $ 150 million mark (around 126 million euros). At the end of August, the film was shown in 41 countries, including Germany, France, Great Britain, Canada and Korea. Here, too, the film producers were satisfied with the income on the opening weekend.

"We got off to a fantastic start internationally and couldn't be happier," said Toby Emmerich, Chairman of the Warner Bros. Pictures Group, commenting on the first box office results. "Tenet" sold 53 million US dollars (the equivalent of around 44.5 million euros) internationally on the first weekend. The success of "Tenet" cannot be measured on the first weekend as with blockbusters before Corona. Toby Emmerich knows that too: "In view of the unprecedented circumstances (…) we know that we are running a marathon and not a sprint." The film should be shown in cinemas around the world for many weeks.
