Former world number 3 and winner of the US Open in 2020, the Austrian Dominic Thiem, who is currently 117th in the ATP rankings, notably due to a persistent wrist injury, announced his retirement from the tennis courts on Friday at the end of the season. “The 2024 season will be my last, I have decided to end my career,” announced the 30-year-old in a video published on the social network Instagram.

17 US Open victories

Among the reasons behind this “carefully considered” decision, he cites the state of his wrist but also “a deep feeling” which has been driving him for “a long time”. Thiem said he was “grateful” for the “incredible experience” he had, through “the ups and downs”, and “excited” for what’s next, without giving details. During his career, Thiem has won 17 tournaments including the US Open in 2020 against German Alexander Zverev, his only Grand Slam title. In addition to two finals at Roland Garros and one at the Australian Open, he also played in two finals of the Masters in London, a competition which brings together the eight best players of the season.

A tribute from Novak Djokovic

The Austrian had to leave the circuit in mid-2021 due to a torn ligament in his right wrist and has since never managed to regain his best level, sinking in 2022 to the depths of the ranking (352nd). The Serbian Novak Djokovic, world No.1, paid tribute to him this week from the Masters 1000 in Rome, while retirement rumors were circulating. “He always showed respect on the court,” he said, praising his “incredible one-handed backhand, his power and his intensity, according to comments cited by the Austrian press agency APA.
