‘House Bombed’: Worried para-biathlete wins bronze

As Ukrainian biathlete Dmitro Suyarko wins the 10-kilometer bronze medal at the Beijing Paralympics, he finds it difficult to concentrate. Because in his homeland his house was “bombed and destroyed”. He demands peace while another sports star donates his prize money.
Concerns about the war at home weigh heavily on Ukrainian biathlete Dmitro Sujarko at the Paralympics in China. “In biathlon, a very high level of concentration is required. I missed twice because yesterday the house where I live was bombed and destroyed,” said Sujarko. Nevertheless, the 25-year-old won bronze over the 10 kilometers on Tuesday. “Today is (International) Women’s Day and my medal is for the women of Ukraine,” he added.
“I’m very happy that my friends Vitaliy and Anatoliy won the gold and silver medals,” said Sujarko. Because with him, two more Ukrainians stood on the podium with Paralympic champions Vitaly Lukyanenko and Anatoli Kowalewski. “It’s something amazing for me,” he explained. “I am very happy but not 100 percent because there is a very special situation in my country and I want peace for Ukraine.”
Ukraine is the dominant nation in para-biathlon at the Beijing Games. The war-torn country won 16 medals, including six gold medals, in the first four days of the competition.
Andy Murray donates all of his prize money
Meanwhile, British tennis star Andy Murray said he would donate all of his prize money for the rest of the year to help victims of the war in Ukraine. He is working with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to do this, said the former number one in the world rankings on Tuesday. He therefore wants to donate all prize money he receives at tennis tournaments this year to Unicef’s Ukraine aid.
In all, more than 7.5 million children are at risk from the war in Ukraine, Murray wrote. Unicef helps to provide them with medical care and early childhood education.
