Tennis Wimbledon: Cornet and Tan eliminated, Nadal gains momentum

After the feat, Alizé Cornet returned to earth. The Frenchwoman, who ended the winning streak of world No.1 Iga Swiatek on Saturday, was beaten by Australian Alja Tomljanovic in the round of 16 at Wimbledon on Monday.

After a good first set where she notably led 4-1, the 32-year-old Niçoise lost the thread and finally saw her opponent (44th) regain the upper hand.

Double broken in the last set, Cornet (37th) hung on despite physical discomfort (she had both thighs strapped), but finally gave in on her serve, exhausted (4-6, 6-4, 6-3) .

tan swept

Revelation of the tournament with its prestigious success against Serena Williams in the 1st round, Harmony Tan did not manage to cross the course of the eighth either.

The young Frenchwoman (115th in the world) was dominated in the large widths by the American Amanda Anisimova (N.20) in 1h13 (6-2, 6-3).

The last two French women in the running are therefore eliminated, but without having to be ashamed of their careers.

Kyrgios gets away with it

Australian Nick Kyrgios, 40th in the world, delivered a serious match on Monday and qualified for the Wimbledon quarter-finals by beating American Brandon Nakashima (56th) 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7 /2), 3-6, 6-2.

Kyrgios, who reached this stage of the competition for the second time at Wimbledon (after 2014), will try to climb for the first time in the last four of a Grand Slam tournament.

Facing him, he will have to do with the Chilean Cristian Garin (43rd), who won a marathon match (4h34) against the Australian Alex de Minaur (19th) after being led two sets to nothing (2-6 , 5-7, 7-6 (7/3), 6-4, 7-6 (10/6).

Nadal raises his voice

Arrived with little rhythm on grass with a last match dating back to 2019, Rafael Nadal is already better, thank you for him. The winner of the Australian Open and Roland-Garros dominated the Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (N.21) in the round of 16 at Wimbledon on Monday (6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (8/6) ).

The 36-year-old Spaniard achieved a score in line with his third against Lorenzo Sonego and seems to be gaining momentum over the matches. Only small scare: Nadal failed to conclude at 5-2 in the third set, but did in the tie-break.

If the signals are green for the record holder of Grand Slams won (22), it is a very big piece that he will have to eliminate to see the semi-finals: the American Taylor Fritz (N.11) who has not yet to drop a single set in four matches played in the tournament.
