Tens of thousands of pre-orders: solar car with a range of 1,600 kilometers is a huge success

• Aptera Motors announces more than 22,000 pre-orders for the three-wheel solar car.
• The range should be 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) thanks to the lightweight construction and solar panel.

In a desert race, a prototype from Aptera Motors outperformed a Tesla Model 3 and an Audi R8 Spyder. It is not directly known whether this marketing stunt has led to the now unexpectedly high pre-orders, but it cannot be ruled out either. In any case, Aptera Motors can look forward to more than 22,000 pre-orders.

In order to make a reservation for the solar car, interested parties must pay a deposit of US$100. The car is available in various equipment levels, which have a direct impact on the range of the purely electrically powered car.

Those who opt for the entry-level version, which costs $25,900 (EUR 24,100), can expect a range of around 400 kilometers. The next larger battery pack already enables a range of 640 kilometers and costs 29,800 US dollars (27,700 euros). If you want to drive further without recharging (up to 965 kilometers), you have to go for the second most expensive variant (34,600 US dollars).

The top version of the Aptera, which costs the equivalent of 41,800 euros, is launched with a promised range of 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers). What all versions have in common is the low drag coefficient (cd value) of 0.13. For comparison: This is the drag coefficient of the Tesla Cybertruck.

Production and first deliveries of the vehicles are scheduled for late 2022. Then the recently presented electric DeLorean, known from Back to the Future, could also have reached series maturity.
