National goalkeeper Robert Enke took his own life more than 14 years ago. Now his widow Teresa explains: “I’m leading a happy life again.”

On November 10, 2009, the football world stood still. The national goalkeeper at the time Robert Enke took his own life at the age of 32. Following this stroke of fate, his wife Teresa Enke, 47, decided to go public and spoke several times about the severe depression that had accompanied her husband for years. Now in an interview with the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” she gave insights into her own mental life. She also had to seek treatment after the death of her heart-sick daughter in 2006 and her husband’s suicide: “It got to the point where I couldn’t take it anymore.”

Teresa Enke went to a clinic for two and a half months

She got help back then and went to a clinic for two and a half months to find joy in life again. This stay helped her a lot to heal her soul. You don’t have to figure everything out yourself, as there are offers of help, Enke continued. Your own strength has limits and it is important to admit that to yourself. Now she’s doing well again.

She married again and had another child with her new husband. She is also financially secure “thanks to Robert”: “I had very difficult times, but now I’m leading a happy life again.”

Kurt Krömer is a positive example

In general, she is of the opinion that depression should not be kept a secret: “I say very clearly: the more people admit to this illness, the more helpful it is for other sufferers.”

Enke sees the open words of comedian Kurt Krömer, 49, who also made his suffering public, as a positive example: “How he made it out of this low point is incredible and a great example of how this illness can be defeated.” Krömer is also connected to her Robert Enke Foundation, which is committed to people suffering from depression and to children with heart disease and their parents.

Robert Enke, who was born in Jena, played in his career for Borussia Mönchengladbach, Benfica Lisbon, FC Barcelona and Hannover 96, among others. After the retirement of Jens Lehmann, 54, and Oliver Kahn, 54, Enke was considered one of the most promising candidates for the club Successor in goal for the German national team. In total, he stood between the posts eight times for the DFB.
