Tesla breaks a production record but misses its quarter because of the Covid

Unsurprisingly, with the Gigafactory in Shanghai which was closed for many weeks, Tesla’s deliveries did not break a record in this second quarter of 2022. However, compared to the same quarter of previous years, the evolution remains excellent. Let’s decipher the data provided by the manufacturer.

We have told you about it many times, Tesla’s Asian factory, the Shanghai Gigafactory, was shut down for a long period in the second quarter of 2022. Usually, it produces around 10,000 vehicles per week, but with the city of Shanghai’s zero Covid policy, it had only produced 10,000 vehicles as of last May. Thus, while the first quarter of 2022 had been a record for Tesla, with 305,407 vehicles delivered, the second quarter ends nine consecutive quarters of increased production volume.

Sales down by more than 18%

If for nearly three years, Tesla has been breaking sales records in each quarter, this will not be the case in the second quarter of 2022, since the figures announced by the manufacturer are well below those at the start of the year. These are in fact only 258,580 vehicles that rolled off the lines of production of the four factories currently in operation: Austin in Texas, Fremont in California, Shanghai in China and Berlin in Germany.

Deliveries concern 254,695 vehicles, compared to 310,048 in the first quarter of 2022. This represents a decrease of 18%, which is far from negligible. Tesla explains this with ” supply chain challenges and factory closures beyond its control“.

In addition to the Covid which has slowed down the Shanghai factory considerably, Tesla is also facing the shortage of semiconductors like other manufacturers, even if it seemed to affect the American manufacturer less in previous semesters.

A monthly production record

Despite everything, the firm of Elon Musk wants to be reassuring by indicating that the month of June was the most productive month in the history of the manufacturer. Detailed figures for the month are not known, but with a Shanghai plant returning to nominal production rate, this bodes well for the current quarter.

Finally, considering the data available for the second quarters of each year since 2011, we note that the year-on-year evolution has not been halted by the low production rate of the Shanghai plant in April and May. . With 258,580 vehicles produced in the second quarter of 2022 compared to 201,250 in the same period last year, it is a more than 28% year-over-year increase for Tesla, which presages a record year 2022. The third quarter will be there to give us an indication of the annual production to expect, but the objective of exceeding one million vehicles produced should be reached without problem.
