Specialized in statistics on the automotive market, the firm Jato recently published its data for the year 2022. The automotive sector has certainly fallen by 4.1% in Europe, but that of electric cars continues to grow to reach 1.56 million battery-powered models marketed. This segment now represents almost 14% of market share.
Volkswagen dominates the market
As far as manufacturers are concerned, it is the VAG group (Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Seat-Cupra, etc.) which records the highest number of registrations with 349,147 cars. Tesla comes in second place with 232,018 registrations, but above all records an increase of 38% compared to 2021. A success that we undoubtedly owe to the arrival of the Model Y Propulsion. Barely further, we find the Stellantis alliance (Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Opel, Jeep, etc.) with 230,383 electric models sold. At the foot of the podium are the South Korean Hyundai-Kia, then the French Renault.
The Tesla Model Y takes the lead
By focusing on the models acclaimed by buyers, the ranking takes another turn. Indeed, if Volkswagen records a high volume of sales, it is in particular thanks to its very extensive offer with many brands and models available. Thus, among the 20 most sold cars, there are four VAG models (ID.4, ID.3, Skoda Enyaq, Cupra Born).
Unsurprisingly, the top of the podium is largely occupied by Tesla. The Model 3, which occupied the first place, is relegated to second position, overtaken by the SUV Model Y which has benefited from the arrival of the Propulsion version on the Old Continent. Sales of Model 3 have thus collapsed by 35% in 2022, largely to the benefit of the Model Y, which sees its sales climb to 137,052 units (+ 424%).
On the French side, the Renault Zoé is in free fall. Long in the lead and still second in 2021, it drops to twelfth place, while its sales drop by 50%. The consolation for Renault comes from the Dacia Spring, which is positioned in seventh position, and the Megane E-Tech which is off to a good start with 32,641 units sold (14th place).
