On the occasion of the communication of its financial results for the 2nd quarter of 2022, the American manufacturer Tesla took the opportunity to take stock of the production rates in its various factories. And that’s good news.
At the moment, it is difficult to buy a car (electric or not) and hope to receive it quickly. Some manufacturers, such as Renault or Dacia, offer “fast” delivery formulas without having the choice of options, engines or colors. Tesla, for its part, is content to produce black or white Model Ys in its Berlin factory. Anyone expecting a Tesla or wanting to order one should therefore be patient. But the situation seems to be improving as the American manufacturer has just communicated.
Tesla doubles its annual production capacity
On the occasion of the presentation of the financial results for the second quarter of 2022, Elon Musk gave some interesting figures concerning the production of the brand’s electric vehicles. Now, the production rate of each factory is such that the manufacturer can manufacture almost 2 million electric cars per year. This is huge, since in 2021 Tesla sold more than 900,000 Model Y, Model X, Model 3 and Model S.
If we compare with the figures unveiled 3 months earlier, it is almost twice as much. This is made possible by the opening of the Gigafactory in Texas and Berlin, which each produce more than 250,000 vehicles per year. In California, in Fremont, production also saw its rate increase by 10% while Shanghai went from 450,000 units per year to 750,000.
Chinese manufacturers still in the rearview mirror
Tesla clarified in its presentation that there were still risks of a temporary reduction in production, in particular because of the shortage of semiconductors or a lack of manpower with, in particular, the temporary closures of certain Gigafactory because of Covid like in Shanghai.
But the manufacturer is confident, stating that the rate of production would increase further in all its factories. We should see a production record for 2022 and this should allow Elon Musk’s company not to be caught up (for the moment) by Chinese manufacturers and in particular by BYD, which is hot on the heels of Tesla.
In recent days, many colleagues announced that Tesla had been overtaken, in number of sales, by the Chinese manufacturer BYD. But in reality, this is not the case at all.
