Tesla has just launched a new universal wall connector in the United States. Its main advantage? Any electric vehicle, whether equipped with a NACS or J1172 port, can connect to it.
Tesla continues to conquer the American electric charging market. For the past six months, many manufacturers have decided to join the “NACS coalition” as Elon Musk likes to say. Indeed, several brands have responded favorably to the American manufacturer’s invitation and have chosen to adopt the NACS standard on their future electric models.
Ford was the first to sign, followed by General Motors, then Rivian, Volvo and Polestar. From what we know, Volkswagen is in talks with Tesla to discuss the terms of its adoption of the NACS standard. Finally, VW will not be the first German brand to join the ranks. Mercedes gave it priority in early July 2023. As of this writing, Fisker has just moved under the NACS flag. The brand’s EVs will be equipped with a NACS port from 2025, according to the manufacturer’s statements.
But Tesla does not intend to stop there and is now tackling home charging. Indeed, the firm now based in Austin has just launch a new Wall Connector. baptized Tesla Universal Wall Connectorthis charger has a considerable advantage over the classic Wall Connector.
Tesla launches Universal Wall Connector in the US
Indeed, it embeds an integrated J1172 adapter. As a result, electric cars equipped with a J1172 port, the standard in force in the United States since 2011, can connect to it to recharge their batteries. To do this, Tesla was inspired by the Magic Docka double connector available on certain Supercharger stations and which opens up charging to EVs equipped with a CCS or J1172 port.
We find the same technical characteristics on the classic Wall Connector, with the exception of course of the integrated J1172 adapter:

For the time being, this universal wall connector is available in the land of Uncle Sam on eBay and on the official Tesla store at the price of $595. For comparison, the classic Wall Connector is charged $100 less, or $495.
