Tesla Model Y beats VW Golf: Surprise in Germany’s registration statistics

ELECTRIC CAR

The VW Golf, darling of the crowds? That was once. For the first time, the Tesla Model Y electric car has overtaken the VW Golf in the registration statistics of the Federal Motor Transport Authority.

  • In September 2022, 9,846 Tesla Model Y were newly registered in Germany.
  • This puts the e-car from the USA in first place in the statistics of the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).
  • The VW Gold had 7,095 new registrations in the same period and only came in second.

The Californian car manufacturer Tesla has hit the bull’s eye with the Model Y, not only in its home country of the USA, but also in Germany. In the September statistics from the KBA, the electric SUV is the undisputed number one and far ahead of all other vehicles, regardless of whether they have a diesel, petrol or hybrid drive.

Compared to the previous month, Tesla’s Model Y was able to achieve an increase of a whopping 818 percent. The Tesla Model 3 – technically closely related to the Model Y and also in a top position – is losing compared to the previous month. Tesla was able to sell 3,878 units here. The VW Tiguan came third in the KBA statistics with 5,887 new registrations.

Fuel cell hardly plays a role

Striking: About half of the vehicles newly registered in September drive up with an alternative drive (electric, hybrid, gas or fuel cell). The purely electric drive accounted for 44,289 new registrations, 28,336 buyers opted for a hybrid model. In contrast, there are just 21 new registrations with a fuel cell drive.

Decline in RVs, SUVs remain strong

With 4,023 new registrations, there is a trend reversal in mobile homes. In recent times, leisure vehicles such as campervans have actually grown continuously. September was now down 17.4 percent from the previous month.

The trend for SUVs is unbroken. This segment recorded a 32.5 percent increase in registrations compared to the previous month. There are 70,664 new registrations here.
