Tesla Model Y: two new colors that are expensive

Tesla announces two new specific colors for the Model Y produced in the Berlin factory. Two new deeper shades that drive up the bill.

Tesla is presenting two new body colors for the Model Y on October 21, 2022: Quicksilver and Midnight Cherry Red. New body colors are so rare at Tesla that they come witha presentation with videos and released to the press.

A launch with great fanfare which is still quite expensive on the invoice of the Model Y Performance and Great Autonomy concerned.

Two colors specific to Model Y produced in Germany

Don’t look for these two new colors, gray and red, for models other than Model Y Performance or Long Autonomy, it’s a waste of time for the moment. These two new colors are only available on models leaving the Gigafactory in Berlin and destined for the European market. Even if the Model Y propulsion, available from €49,990, should soon leave the production lines of the Berlin factory, it is not currently affected by this novelty.

These two colors do not complete Tesla’s offer, but they replace the metallic midnight gray and the multilayer red that are still found on Model Y propulsion and Model 3.

Tesla describes these two new shades as follows:

  • Midnight Cherry Red : an intense metallic color with a spectacular depth that evolves according to the light.
  • Quicksilver : a dynamic metallic liquid gray that underlines and accentuates the curves of the Model Y.

The name of this new shade of gray is a bit surprising, even if the spelling differs, it still looks a lot like the name of a well-known clothing brand: Quiksilver.

The Berlin Gigafactory paint shop was designed by Tesla to be able to offer new colors. After a problem with leaking paint tanks which had made the environmental associations step up, this new workshop finally seems to be showing itself more positively. The installations make it possible to produce up to 13 extremely thin coats of paint, which can give more depth to certain shades. This is the case for these two new Tesla colors.

Colors that are more expensive than the old ones

If these two new colors replace the old ones, they do not include the price. Quicksilver Gray is a $3,000 option, and Midnight Cherry Red will set you back $3,200 more than the standard white shade.

To have an element of comparison, the metallic night gray is charged 1,600 €, or 50% less expensive. Multicoat Red is a $2,000 option, while the new Midnight Cherry Red is $3,200.

By way of comparison, with prices above €3,000 for its body colors, Tesla paints cost more than those offered by BMW for the i4 or Mercedes for the EQE. At BMW, only very specific colors are charged as expensive.

One wonders if the quality of the Tesla paint will be good enough for buyers of these Model Ys to find their way around. Otherwise, we risk coming across more and more white, black or blue Model Ys on our streets.
