WASHINGTON, Feb 1 (Reuters) – Tesla Inc is to recall 53,822 U.S. vehicles equipped with a new version of its full self-driving software, due to a safety risk.

The National Motor Vehicle Safety Agency (NHTSA) said the recall affects 2016-2022 Model S and Model X, 2017-2022 Model 3 and 2020-2022 Model Y vehicles.

According to NHTSA, Tesla will perform an over-the-air (OTA) software update to disable the “rolling stop” feature that allows certain models to avoid a complete stop at certain intersections.

With the so-called “FSD Beta” driver assistance, the car continues to drive automatically even when a “Stop” sign is on its route.

According to Tesla, the feature requires driving at less than 9 km per hour and that no cars, pedestrians or cyclists are near the intersection.

This option violates state laws requiring a complete stop of vehicles at intersections.

According to a report filed with NHTSA, Tesla said it met with agency staff Jan. 10 and 19 “to discuss functionality, including operating parameters.” The automaker later accepted the recall on January 20.

Last week, Tesla announced that the number of vehicles equipped with the FSD Beta option in the United States was 60,000 compared to a few thousand at the end of September.

However, Tesla said it was not aware of any warranty claims, accidents, injuries or fatalities as of January 27. (French version Dina Kartit, edited by Sophie Louet)
