Tesla relaunches free supercharging on US Model S and X (but raises prices?)

Don’t look for logic, there probably isn’t any. Tesla is increasing the prices of these two high-end models, while offering a gift for those who order one of these models.

Tesla is offering 3 years of free Supercharging to US customers who order a Model S or Model X. This new benefit joins other rewards, such as sponsorship, which the brand relaunched recently to boost sales. This could be good news for customers, if this gift did not in fact accompany a price increase, noticed by the Teslarati site on April 21.

During the presentation of the financial results for the first quarter of 2023, Elon Musk shed light on how Tesla prices were reassessed on a weekly basis. The rise in Model S and X prices, when they had previously fallen, is the perfect example.

Towards a return of free supercharging for Model S and X in France?

Before the Model 3 was released, Tesla’s Model S and X came with unlimited free supercharging. A marketing argument that has contributed to Tesla’s reputation around the world. The removal of this perk in 2018, except for vehicles sold before the change, hasn’t been very successful. Even if customers could understand that the brand was not going to indefinitely pay the full electrons to millions of vehicles in circulation.

The appearance of this offer on the American site can revive hopes of obtaining free supercharges on the two high-end models, including in France. There is no question of it yet, but you will have understood that with Tesla things are changing very quickly. This possibility is not completely excluded if the brand believes that it must find a way to encourage customers to opt for a Model S or X.

The American offer is still limited to 3 years of access to superchargers, and no longer for life as in the past. If US customers want to take advantage of it, better not wait too long, the offer can disappear as quickly as it appeared, even if it is supposed to apply for all models delivered until June 30, 2023:

Customers who take delivery of a new Model S or Model X vehicle between April 20, 2023 and June 30, 2023 are eligible for unlimited free charging on their new vehicle. Free Supercharge is tied to your Tesla Account and cannot be transferred to another vehicle or person upon transfer of ownership. Tesla will not be responsible if delivery of your vehicle does not occur by June 30, 2023. Used vehicles, business orders and vehicles used for commercial purposes are excluded from this promotion. Promotion is subject to change and may end at any time without notice. »

Is it worth it if prices go up?

The free supercharge is a real advantage for heavy riders who can thus make substantial savings on their long journeys, especially if they have opted for the Plaid version. For those who only use the network of superchargers occasionally, the game is clearly not worth the candle.

After several price cuts since the beginning of the year, the American site of Tesla has again increased prices by 2.6% for the Model X and 2.9% for the Model S:

  • the base Model X is now available from $97,490 excluding tax (€88,900).
  • The basic Model S is displayed at 87,490 dollars excluding tax (79,800 €).
  • Strangely, the Plaid versions of these two models are displayed at the same price of 107,490 dollars excluding tax (98,000 €), which already defies all logic.

For the United States, this remains particularly affordable prices for these two models, despite the increase observed with the appearance of the free supercharging offer.
