Tesla Semi electric truck in everyday testing: This is how far it can go on one battery charge

TESLA

According to Tesla boss Elon Musk, the Semi electric truck has a range of 800 kilometers. An independent everyday test now clarifies how far the Tesla Semi can go on one battery charge.

Purely electric trucks are currently the exception on German roads. This is apparently also due to the shorter range compared to diesel vehicles. Scania’s electric truck 45 R/S, for example, can travel around 350 kilometers. The 800 kilometers communicated by Tesla boss Elon Musk for the Semi sound much more competitive.

But as every driver and freight forwarder knows: official range information can only be believed to a limited extent. In everyday life, under practical conditions, significantly fewer kilometers can usually be driven before refueling or charging is necessary.

As part of the “Run on Less” campaign, the independent organization North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) has now used three Tesla Semi models to check the consumption and range of the Tesla truck under everyday conditions. It is the first attempt of its kind and will be published in real time. The three semi models traveled different distances; no truck reached the predicted 800 kilometers in one go.

A truck drove a total of 670 kilometers in one working day, 540 kilometers of which were on one load. There was a charging stop for 20 minutes, during which the battery level increased from 17.5 percent to 34 percent.

The second semi covered 480 kilometers within six hours, which cost the previously full battery 79 percentage points. The third Tesla Semi covered the longest daily distance of 877 kilometers. The car drove 607 kilometers in one go without recharging. The reserve zone was reached. The truck was then charged to 55 percent within 3.5 hours and then drove another 270 kilometers.

This information is missing from the data

The real-time data from the Run on less program provides very interesting insights into the consumption and range of the Tesla Semi and the study also looks at environmental influences such as the weather. However, the data does not show how heavily loaded the trucks were at the time of the test. There is also little information available about the route. For example, we don’t know whether there will be many climbs along the way.

In November 2022, Elon Musk posted an update on the Tesla Semi on X (formerly Twitter). Here, a semi weighing 36.7 tons covered a distance of around 800 kilometers on one battery charge.

In the USA, the Tesla Semi is used by the beverage manufacturer PepsiCo for transport tasks. The aim is to find out whether the Tesla Semi can replace diesel trucks in the future. A test under winter conditions is still pending. You can find more news about electric cars here.
