The first version of Tesla Vision is being rolled out and brings a new parking assistance feature.

Last October, Tesla announced that its new Model Y and Model 3 vehicles would henceforth be delivered without ultrasonic sensors. These components located in the front and rear bumpers of its cars were nevertheless essential for the proper functioning of several driver assistance options, particularly during maneuvers and parking.

New parking assistance

But an update (version 2023.6.9) deployed worldwide from today finally compensates for this absence. This brings the first version of Tesla Vision, and in particular the Tesla Vision Park Assist functionality for parking assistance.

According to the update’s patch note, Tesla Vision Park Assist “provides visual and audio alerts of surrounding objects. This feature uses the occupancy network to predict high definition object contours 360 degrees around the car”.

Early videos of Tesla Vision Park Assist have started posting on social media, with results looking mixed so far. Further testing is needed to assess whether this new option is more efficient than the old system based on ultrasonic sensors.

Tesla Vision is still far from complete

Without ultrasonic sensors, Tesla vehicles must rely on their cameras to judge distances, which could be a problem in poor light conditions or if the cameras’ field of view is obstructed.

For the driver, Tesla Vision Park Assist displays an overview of the situation in the space of the vehicle on the central screen, with a line surrounding the car to materialize obstacles. A color code indicates the approximate distance of the detected objects: white, you have room, orange, it starts to get closer, and red, you will have to think about not getting any closer.

The update brings an incomplete version of Tesla Vision since only Park Assist is offered. As a reminder, the removal of the sensors also removes several functions related to fully autonomous driving (Full Self Driving), such as Auto Parking or Smart Summon.
