Tesla has just signed an agreement with Ford to notably open its Superchargers to the American automotive giant.

Tesla is not only the world number 1 in electric vehicles, it is also one of the main suppliers of electricity for these cars thanks to its charging stations: Superchargers. From now on, this dense network of terminals is open to Ford.

12,000 Superchargers open

The development of electric vehicles in the world is conditioned by the development of electric terminals capable of supplying drivers, anywhere and at any time. France has understood this problem well and now has 100,000 terminals. But this problem could be reduced by pooling resources between the different manufacturers.

In this context, the announcement made by Tesla should be good news. The American company has just communicated on an agreement with Ford which will open up all the Superchargers present in Canada and the United States to the latter. This open door is also particularly wide, since there are currently some 12,000 Tesla charging stations on the territory of the two North American countries.

Ford is changing its charging port

But these terminals are not the only subject of the agreement between the two car manufacturers. Indeed, with this deal, Ford’s second-generation electric vehicles will in future carry Tesla’s charging port, the North American Charging Standard (NACS). These are new models including an electric truck and an SUV, which will be marketed from 2025.

To justify his choice, Ford CEO Jim Farley mentioned the ease of use of the Tesla connector, but also the territorial network of Superchargers and the reliability of its routing software. For his part, Elon Musk described this agreement as an example of the driving role of Tesla in the progressive electrification of transport.

A Ford vehicle can seamlessly charge at a Tesla Supercharger using a Ford app. Overall, the idea is that we don’t want the Tesla Supercharger network to be a walled garden. We want it to support electrification and sustainable transportation “, he thus indicated.
