Does the German regulator have a grudge against Tesla?
The automatic lane change allowed by Full-Self-Driving, an optimized version of Tesla’s Autopilot, does not seem to please the German authorities at all. The Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), the German federal authority of the Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport delegated to road traffic, announces that it is opening an investigation into Autopilot.
In its last Sunday edition of February 20, 2022, Bild am Sonntag got an explanation from a Kraftfahrt-Budesamt spokesperson: The KBA has opened an investigation into an electronic lane change feature in Tesla’s Autopilot. This function, which the American car manufacturer offers as an accessory in some of its models, “may not be authorized in Europe”. »
More than this driving aid as such, it is indeed the automatic lane change that is mainly targeted. Indeed, this functionality could be taxed “ of illegality ” in Europe. The KBA investigation also involves the Dutch Vehicle Authority (RDW), which is responsible for approving Tesla vehicles in Europe. Contacted by Bild am Sonntag, the American firm has not yet wished to comment on the subject. Recall that Tesla has already been convicted of false advertising about its Autopilot in Germany in 2020.
