Test completed – Kahlenberg cable car remains on the ground

The dispute over the controversial Kahlenberg project continues. Is there an EIA process now?

It is still unclear whether and when you can take a cable car to the Kahlenberg. However, a decision as to whether an EIA procedure is needed for the highly controversial project has come closer. The City of Vienna has completed the examination of the documents. But what happens next? The next step is to initiate the party hearing by the responsible MA 22 (environmental protection). Project applicants and the Vienna Environmental Protection Agency have party status. Iris Tichelmann, a Viennese environmental lawyer, explains that they are now waiting for the documents that they want to “take a close look at”. However, there is no right of veto. “Since all further steps depend on the outcome of the EIA determination process, we now have to wait and see,” said the project operator in response to a “Krone” request. In any case, there is no preference for one procedure – what is crucial is to finally have legal certainty. So it remains exciting.
