TEST of the ACER Predator Triton 300 SE: the compact and powerful laptop

For once, we tested a compact laptop with the ambition of constantly displaying our games in 1080p. This machine therefore aptly bears the name “laptop”.

Very often what we call laptop is not portable, especially in the field of video games: they are most of the time more transportable than portable. The shade is thin, but one struggles to go unnoticed and remains heavy and bulky, while the other fits very easily into a backpack to be forgotten. The Predator Triton 300 SE is of this caliber. 323 x 228 x 17.90 mm for 1.8 kg, which means that it can fit even in the smallest backpacks or travel bags. A real featherweight, in short. This is typically the kind of PC that aims to accompany you on your travels, necessarily restricted in times of pandemic.

A chic design

The set signed ACER has the luxury of being in brushed aluminum with the most beautiful effect. Only the screen remains in a plastic of metallic appearance, very solid. The presence of a quality hinge also gives the whole a feeling of very appreciable robustness. This is not necessarily the case with the ultraportable category, a nice tour de force for ACER.

Connetiques’ corner

On the sides, you will find a very respectable amount of connectivity for a laptop of this size: an HDMI port, a USB-A 3.2 port on each side, a USB-C 3.2 port that supports DisplayPort as well as connectivity. Thunderbolt 4 and a trusty 3.5mm headphone jack, enough to deal with many eventualities without lugging around an accessory or additional cable.

A little “cold” screen

The screen itself is a 14-inch IPS panel with a definition of 1080p enjoying a refresh rate of 144Hz. If the contrasts and the brightness are quite good, some colors remain a little cold. Everything looks a bit bluish, and it takes a while for the eye to really get used to it. Note, however, a coverage of the sRGB spectrum (the default colorimetric space) of 97.6%. For an IPS panel of this type, the ACER Triton 300 SE does quite well, in particular thanks to the presence of deep blacks.

A very good keyboard

The keyboard with its short stroke and excellent key feedback is very flexible. Despite the compact size, it is very easy to type and everything runs smoothly and quickly, a perfect asset for office automation. And an undeniable advantage for gaming. The whole has a three-zone RGB system, which can be fully configured using the software preinstalled on the PC.

A powerful machine for its size

In its belly we find a solid configuration for video games in 1080p namely:

  • Processor : Intel Core i7-11370H
  • Graphic card : Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060
  • RAM : 16 GB
  • Storage : 1 TB SSD m2

In Metro Exodus, it managed to maintain an average of 50 FPS at 1080p in Ultra mode. In a more demanding game like Cyberpunk 2077, you shouldn’t expect this level of detail to exceed 30 FPS. It will be necessary to make some concessions and especially to deactivate the ray tracing and the DLSS 2.0 to touch the finger the 50 FPS. The beast is above all an ultraportable, and we can not therefore expect to enjoy the same performance as an RTX 3070 or a 3080 mobile. However, this remains a PC that will allow you to take advantage of the majority of AAAs without having to deactivate too many graphics options.

Unfortunately, playing games on this type of device is synonymous with noise nuisance, and if you don’t want to feel like you’re in the engine room of an aircraft carrier, it’s best to turn off the turbo mode. . It is indeed quite possible to play games without having to run the powerful fans to the maximum, but this remains an advantage to avoid seeing your frame rate rise too quickly and seeing your PC heat up excessively under the fingers.
