TEST The Last of Us Part II Remastered: do we really have to drop 10 euros for the PS5 version?

In 2020, PS4 owners were able to discover the sequel to The Last of Us. A gripping story, a thrilling adventure, emotions are turned upside down throughout this odyssey. In 2021, the studio released the frame rate (60 fps) on PS5 by releasing a patch 1.08, without any other real addition. Obviously, some players were waiting for a real “next-gen” version, Naughty Dog pleases the community by releasing a “Remastered” edition.

“No return” invites itself to the party and it has something to entertain.

So no, it’s not just an improvement of the image to have a stunning 4K rendering, the firm also wanted to bring a bit of new features to amuse, but also to educate fans on the design of this production. And for good reason, in the “Behind the scenes” section, we have access to “lost levels”. What exactly is it? Phases which were simply deleted from the final version. We can then, for around twenty minutes, discover interesting sequences, highlighting the trauma ofEllie. Moreover, everything is enhanced with some comments from the developers to explain to us why these small chapters were removed from the title. A pleasure to be able to get our hands on these pre-alphas.

If you like going behind the scenes of a production, this edition is loaded with bonuses (making-off, concept images, and many other things). Then, the team noticed that the community played a lot with the guitar. Well be in heaven, a dedicated mode, “Free Play Guitar”, is now included. Indeed, it is possible to choose your character, your setting, but also your guitar (guitar, banjo, electric, etc.) and launch into wild solos by tickling the touchpad of the DualSense.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered 12 17 11 2023Let’s talk little, let’s talk well, “Sans Retour” invites itself to the party and it has something to entertain. This mode immerses us in a universe where we must survive waves of enemies. Challenges are present and, once completed, allow you to unlock new protagonists, appearances, and other bonuses. Point to take into account, the difficulty is increasing. The more we progress, the more difficult the enemies are; you are going to die and not just once… Speaking of death, know that death is permanent. Basically, you lose absolutely everything and have to start your session again; you must therefore organize yourself well (improvement of weapons, objects, inventory, etc.) to reach the end of the tunnel. Furthermore, the end concludes with a boss that puts your nerves to the test. “No Return” is not just hiding and killing to achieve our goals, it is also “Defense”, where we must protect each other (the player and comrades controlled by the AI) facing creatures, “Capture”, where we must flush out a chest guarded by opponents, or “Prey”, where we must stand up to opponents for a period of time. In short, you will have understood, we spent hours and hours on this new game mode which was able to entertain us as it should.

And what is the visual part of all this worth? It’s simply masterful. The Last of Us Part II Remastered is stunningly beautiful. Yes, if you have a 4K screen at home, the difference is palpable from the first minutes. The game is fine, well detailed, with crisp and impressive textures. Two settings are available. The first, “Fidelity”, allows you to have a superb 4K image, with a frame rate stuck at 30 fps. However, if you have a compatible TV VRRby unlocking the “Frame Rate”, the game seems to run in the 40-50 fps. Enough to tantalize your eyes and take a little slap in the face! The second, “Performance”, displays a 1440p rendering upscaled in 4K in order to obtain a title running at 60 fps. Unsurprisingly, this mode is less attractive with less flashy environments, so if you have the right equipment at home, you might as well go all out on the options !

A video game masterpiece remains a video game masterpiece…

In addition, if you already have the beast at home, it is possible to recover its backup (quite easily). So, for those who want to do this adventure again without any hassle, it is possible to start dragging your feet again with your equipment. About the DualSense, the PS5 controller is used wonderfully. The triggers adapt depending on the weapon, and harden more or less, to make us feel the heaviness of a trigger. The vibrations are intense to make us discern various materials in our hands. In short, a pure treat!
