This father thinks he would have ended his life if he had not been diagnosed with his illness. He has struggled throughout his life due to his undiagnosed illness.
Due to his difficulties since his childhood, this Australian father thought he was a bad person and wanted to kill himself. Orion Kelly, 44, has undiagnosed autism. All the difficulties through which he passed throughout his life, he did not understand them and could not not associate them with this disease. Orion had done an evaluation before, but the doctors hadn’t not confirmed his autism despite his 3-year-old son, Hugo, having the same symptoms as him. Orion says having had suicidal thoughts at some stage of his dismay, explaining that “for an undiagnosed adult with autism, being told by a doctor that you are not autistic can have an impact deeply damaging“His deduction was that if he was not autistic, given the difficulties he is having in his life, he must be”a bad person born to suffer and struggle” in his life. Orion, living with his family in the state of Victoria, Australia, did not hide thathe wanted to kill himself after his first diagnosis.
Her autism saved her life
Supported and encouraged by his wife Renée, 38, Orion asks for a second opinion, that of a doctor specializing in autism assessments adulthood. These evaluations confirmed thathe is indeed autistic, like her three-year-old son. “If my wife hadn’t supported and encouraged me to seek a second opinion and evaluation from a psychiatrist who specializes in diagnosing autism, I’m afraid I’m not there yet“, he explains before adding”I sincerely and wholeheartedly mean it when I say that autism saved my life“.
