Tetra Pak is ideal for upcycling! Here we show you great ideas about what can be done with the packaging.

What ends up as waste in the recycling bin is suitable as an excellent handicraft material: we’re talking about Tetra Pak! Tetra Paks make wonderful DIY projects. Upcycling is the motto here! From utensils to gift packaging to small growing pots, all options are open to you with the coated packaging. Here you can find out what creative things you can do with Tetra Paks.

Tetra Pak upcycling: How it works

Tetra Paks of any kind make excellent craft supplies. The best thing about it: We usually have juice cartons, milk cartons & Co. at home anyway and constantly get (handicraft) supplies. Once they have been thoroughly cleaned and the top layer removed, the underlying paper layer of the Tetra Paks can be freely decorated and used for crafting. All you have to do is follow these steps:

  1. Unfold the folded corners at the top. Cut off the top of the packaging with scissors or a utility knife. Washes the Tetra Pak thoroughly with a little dish soap and plenty of water and then let it dry.
  2. Knead the Tetra Pak well with your hands: On the one hand, this ensures that the printed layer can be removed more easily in the next step and, on the other hand, the packaging then gets an interesting look.
  3. Carefully peel off the top coated color film: To do this, start at a corner of the seam and use your fingernail to carefully lift off the layer. As soon as the layer has been lifted, you can usually pull it off over a large area.
  4. Finally: Fold the top edge of the bag inwards twice. Tetrapak Upcycling Preparations Social Embed

A notice: It is suitable all Tetra Paks for crafting and upcycling. You can use the normal juice or milk bags as well as the smaller Tetra Paks, e.g. B. for tomato passata or applesauce. However, depending on the product, the upper layer can be removed with varying degrees of ease. Sometimes patience is required here.

Upcycling: designing and decorating Tetra Pak

Once you’ve removed the top layer of the Tetra Pak, you can decorate the underlying layer of paper however you like. For example:

  • masking tape
  • border, bias tape or lace ribbons
  • Acrylic paint, colored pencils, crayons, watercolor, felt-tip pens
  • hand lettering
  • Draw doodles
  • Stamp (e.g. letters, potato print)
  • stencils and spray cans
  • decoupage

Tip: Don’t paint the Tetra Pak until you’ve turned the edge inside out, otherwise the paint will make the material too stiff.

As soon as the Tetra Pak is decorated, it can be used in the direction of upcycling for a wide variety of possibilities, e.g. as:

  • Utensilo for pens, office supplies etc.
  • lantern
  • Vase
  • Breeding pot (since the Tetra Pak is waterproof)
  • gift wrapping

Of course you can also use the complete Tetra Pack packaging as a basis for handicrafts: rinse it out, paint it and use it to make toy houses for your children, for example (as in the picture above).
