The 1974 horror film, produced, directed and co-written by Tobe Hooper, is the very first film in a cult franchise.
It all started 49 years ago in the depths of Texas where friends become the victims of a family of cannibals on their way to an old farmhouse.
Upon release, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was presented as being based on real events in order to appeal to a wider audience and serve as a subtle commentary on the political climate of the time. Although Leatherface’s character and minor story details were inspired by the crimes of murderer Ed Gein, his plot is largely fictional.
