Thales: contract with ESA for oxygen on the Moon

(CercleFinance.com) – Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), announces that it has signed a study contract worth one million euros with the European Space Agency (ESA) relating to the development of a payload concept for the extraction of oxygen from lunar rock.

The company worked with AVS, Metalysis, the Open University and Redwire Space Europe to define, for an ESA lunar mission, a payload demonstrator that uses molten salt and electrolysis to extract oxygen from moon rock.

This payload concept, selected from among the proposals of the many industrial consortia vying for this contract, will have to validate the capacity to produce oxygen in situ in the quantities required by future lunar colonies.
