Thales: cooperation around nuclear fusion by laser – 06/12/2022 at 12:25

(CercleFinance.com) – Thales announces that it has scientific cooperation with Marvel Fusion relating to laser nuclear fusion, a solution considered by some to be ‘the most promising solution to energy transition issues’.

This research program will involve the adaptation, from 2023, of the Thales laser system, located at the European Center for Laser Research in Nuclear Physics, at ELI-NP (Măgurele, Romania) and presented as ‘the most powerful in the world’.

As part of its continued cooperation with ELI-NP, Thales will provide a new stretching module, used to stretch laser pulses in time.

Marvel Fusion aims to present its first research results within three years, before building the first commercial power plants in the 2030s.

‘Fusion based on latest-generation short-pulse lasers can enable the European Union to guarantee a state-of-the-art energy system,’ says Franck Leibreich, director of laser activity at Thales.
