Thales: precision satellite navigation for Koreasat

(CercleFinance.com) – Thales announced Thursday that the Koreasat 6A satellite will carry a payload dedicated to precision satellite navigation designed by its subsidiary Thales Alenia Space.

This data collection and transmission system and satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS) aims to improve the continuity and operational availability of Korea’s KASS satellite navigation system.

This system, developed since 2016 by Thales Alenia Space jointly with the Korean aerospace research institute KARI, is similar to the European EGNOS system.

It increases and improves the positioning and navigation performance provided by satellite navigation systems (GNSS) for multiple sectors of activity and, in particular, the air sector.

The project follows the signing, in September 2022, of a contract for the Koreasat 6A telecommunications satellite between the Korean satellite communications operator KT Sat and Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%).
