Romania leaves emotional letter in cabin

The Romanian national team is one of the surprises of the European Football Championship. The Eastern Europeans storm into the round of 16 as group winners, but the Dutch are a size too big for them. After the game, the Romanians leave a message in the dressing room – to Germany.

The Romanian national football team was very disappointed after their European Championship exit, but they did not want to say goodbye to Germany as bad guests. As the European Football Union (UEFA) announced at X, the team of national coach Eduard Iordanescu removed all the dirt from their Munich dressing room after the 0:3 defeat against the Netherlands – and left an emotional letter to the host country.

“EURO 2024 was one of the most important football experiences for all of us so far and we are very happy that the stage on which it took place was Germany,” it said. “Every game, every emotion, every experience brought us together to feel the magic of football.”

The team is leaving Germany “with the feeling that we have given everything for Romania” and is “grateful for everything we have experienced here. It was an honour to be part of the big family of European football”.

Romania had advanced to the round of 16 as winners of Group D after a convincing 3-0 win against Ukraine, a 0-2 defeat against Belgium and a 1-1 draw against Slovakia, but the underdog then failed to beat the Dutch 3-0. The “Elftal” took the lead early on, but then wasted one chance after another. The Romanians were unable to punish them. In the end, a brace from BVB star Donyell Malen sealed everything. And so, after two exciting weeks in Germany, all that was left to say was: “Thank you for making us feel at home!”
