Thanks to the new Gates invention: electric motorcycles are becoming even quieter

MOBILITY

A new Gates carbon belt drive called Moto X5 should help make e-motorcycles even quieter. How this is to be done, we explain to you here.

  • The new Gates Moto X5 belt drive system aims to further reduce the operating noise of e-motorcycles.
  • Not only is it quieter, it’s also more efficient.
  • In comparison to the chain drive, the belt also requires significantly less maintenance.

Belt drives from Gates Carbon Drive are used in e-bikes, bicycles, e-scooters and increasingly also in electric motorcycles. They offer some solid advantages over the chain, which is still much more common. The most important: belt drives do not need to be oiled and usually do not need to be retensioned, they are practically maintenance-free over thousands of kilometers.

Minus 15 decibels

With the Moto X5, Gates has now introduced a new belt that should help to further reduce the noise level of electric motorcycles. According to the manufacturer, independent tests have shown that the new belt reduces noise by 15 decibels over the entire speed range compared to the chain.

In addition, the Moto X5 strap is said to be more durable than previous straps from the manufacturer thanks to a new material mix. The X5 is compatible with existing systems and is therefore also suitable as a spare part if a change is due. Gates wants to target the Asian market in particular, where e-scooters and mid-range motorcycles are increasingly being electrified.
