It’s official: the VPN service included in the subscription offer Google One will close its doors next month. Announced earlier this year, the termination of Google One VPN now has a specific date, as confirmed by Google on its support page.
Last month, the Mountain View firm indicated in an email sent to its Google One subscribers that it would soon part with its VPN, only less than four years after its initial launch. The service did not meet with the expected success, and will permanently close its doors in a month to the day. Indeed, the American behemoth has just confirmed the date from which users will no longer be able to use the Google One VPN.
Google One VPN: a service that will close its doors next month
From June 20, 2024, access to the VPN through Google One will no longer be possible. On its support page, Google provides instructions for uninstalling the VPN from Windows and macOS operating systems, as well as for removing the VPN profile on Android and iOS. It is also specified that users will have to deactivate the VPN from the One application, in the “Benefits” tab.
This decision on the part of Google to want to abandon its VPN is not really surprising. In addition to having already killed many of its services in the past (Google Keep potentially being next on the list), the American firm has fallen seriously behind the competition with its Google One VPN service, the alternatives being numerous and qualitative .
What alternatives for users?
If the disappearance of the Google One VPN is now confirmed, other solutions exist for users wishing to secure their online browsing. Google Fi, Google’s mobile operator service, will continue to offer its own VPN. In addition, previous generation Pixel smartphones (Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a and Fold) will benefit from integrated VPN functionality from June 3, 2024, via a software update.
This feature, officially called “VPN by Google”, will be directly integrated into the operating system. Note that for models in the Pixel 8 range, it is already present and therefore does not require an update. Affected users will therefore have the choice to migrate to these options or turn to other independent VPN providers.
