It’s official, Spotify increases the prices of its various premium subscriptions in France. This new increase will be included in the June invoice for users of the platform.

The streaming giant had warned the French in March. The price of its paid subscription would increase in order to compensate for the “ streaming tax » of 1.2% imposed by the government on music streaming platforms. The funds will be used to finance the National Music Center (CNM), created in the early 2020s to support the French music industry. According to the public entity, Spotify uses this tax to justify the increase in its prices.

The highest prices in the euro zone

Accusations which have not convinced the Swedish service to back down. In a message sent to its paying subscribers on May 28, it announced the increase in its subscriptions from June. Thus, the basic premium offer will increase from 10.99 euros to 11.12 euros. For the family subscription, the price now stands at 18.21 euros, an increase of 22 cents. For its part, the student package sees its price increase by 7 cents to reach 6.06 euros. This is more than in all other countries in the euro zone.

Although Spotify worked hard to find alternative solutions, the French government ultimately decided to impose this 1.2% tax on all music streaming services », Regrets the company.

As soon as the implementation of this new fee was announced, Spotify stepped up to the plate by threatening to disinvest in France. It has since been implemented with the end of festival sponsorship Francofolies de la Rochelle And Spring of Bourges.

A potential impact on the platform in France

Spotify is committed to defending artists and will continue to pay nearly two thirds of its revenue to rights holders (i.e. several hundred million euros in France in 2023) », continues the company. For its part, the CNM recalled in March that the funds recovered via the tax would make it possible to financially support artists, and not its own operations.

It remains to be seen whether this new increase, prices having already increased last summer, will have a detrimental impact on Spotify’s activities in France. For now, the world number 1 in music streaming has never achieved profitability over a full year.
