This is news that risks making bikers react (again). The technical inspection of motorized two-wheelers and three-wheelers, as well as motorized quadricycles (category L), will finally be implemented, after years of gestation. As a reminder, this measure, very controversial among owners of motorcycles and scooters, aims to respond to a European directive dating from 2014. It aims to establish a compulsory technical inspection for these vehicles, similar to that to which cars, in particular , are already submitted.
Gradual implementation, from April 2024
According to a decree published in the Official Journal this Tuesday, October 24, the first vehicles concerned must be checked within four months from April 15, 2024. These are motorcycles and scooters (and other category L vehicles) placed in circulation before January 1, 2017 and whose anniversary date of first circulation is before April 15.
Subsequently, it will be for vehicles registered between 2017 and the end of 2019 to carry out this check, in 2025, then for those registered between 2020 and the end of 2021, in 2026. A staggering system has therefore been chosen, in order to avoid bottlenecks at control centers.
For vehicles put into circulation in the future, the technical inspection must be carried out within six months preceding the expiration of a period of four years from the date of their first entry into circulation, then every three years.
The control should cost “around €50”, announced Clément Beaune, Minister Delegate in charge of Transport, last June. It will cover various control points, concerning both security and nuisance. Excessive noise may, for example, give rise to a second inspection.
