“That’s just the tip”: “Last generation” cuts Christmas tree in Berlin

“Last generation” cuts Christmas tree in Berlin

Activists of the “Last Generation” attack the Christmas tree in front of the Brandenburg Gate with a handsaw. The truncated treetop symbolizes the apex of the underlying climate catastrophe, is the reasoning. The resistance will not stop at the festival either.

Climate activists of the “last generation” have sawed off the top of the Christmas tree at the Brandenburg Gate. According to a press release, two of the activists used a lifting platform to lift the 15-meter-high fir tree. Using a simple saw, they cut off the top of the Nordmann fir and attached a banner to the lifting platform. “This is just the top of the Christmas tree,” it said.

“So far we have only seen the tip of the underlying catastrophe in Germany,” said climate activist Lilli Gomez, explaining the action. “While all of Germany spends the week getting the best gifts from the biggest stores, others are wondering where to get their water to drink after drought and floods have wiped out their crops.” The climate collapse in Germany is just around the corner and the federal government is making no move to protect us.

Protest actions should continue

Last Generation spokeswoman Aimeé van Baalen emphasized how thin the ice we are walking on already is. “Any further warming creates more cracks and uncertainties. We can no longer rely on our livelihoods being secure.” The peaceful resistance of the activists will therefore not stop at Christmas and in the New Year.

Just last week, climate demonstrators tried to block the access roads to the office buildings of the Bundestag. Three demonstrators from the “Last Generation” group were sitting on the driveway to the Paul-Löbe-Haus on Otto-von-Bismarck-Allee. Four other demonstrators in front of the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus on Adele-Schreiber-Krieger-Strasse.

Since the beginning of 2022, the “Last Generation” has been blocking streets in Berlin and other major cities to fight for a radical climate change. There were also campaigns in museums, stadiums, ministries, at airports and on oil pipelines. In the previous week, the homes of eleven members in various federal states were searched. It was about actions by climate protection against the oil refinery PCK in Schwedt in north-eastern Brandenburg.
