The “Spencer Tiara” that Diana wore on her wedding day is probably one of the most famous pieces of jewelry in recent history. Accompanying Lady Diana on her way through St Paul’s Cathedral to the Princess of Wales in 1981 would make her probably the most emotional piece for Catherine’s first state banquet as Princess of Wales. But she will certainly not wear this special piece of all things when she receives South Africa’s President Ramaphosa. After Diana’s death, it is said to have gone back to the Spencer family and is therefore no longer owned by the British royal family. So Kate will not wear the 1932 tiara. The Lover’s Knot tiara, originally commissioned for Queen Mary in 1917, is very popular. Adorned with nineteen hanging pearls and a row of diamonds, the Windsor heirloom is said to have been one of Princess Diana’s favourites, so may also provide a link to the previous Princess of Wales. In addition, it would not be the first time that the mother of three wears this: Catherine showed up with the pretty jewel at the state banquet for King Willem-Alexander, 55, and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, 51, in 2018.
