Intel seems to have to move towards a change of socket for its future generations of processors.

Contrary to initial rumors, Intel Meteor Lake processors coming in 2023 will not use the LGA2551 socket, which would be reserved for other products. There remains question of a change of socket for this 14e generation.

LGA1851 socket same size as LGA1700?

Indeed, relayed by our colleagues from Videocardz, leaks indicate that the Meteor Lake generation will exploit the LGA1851 socket. Composed of 1851 pins, it highlights another notable difference with the LGA2551 mentioned above: its dimensions.

At 45 x 37.5 millimeters, it is exactly the same size as the LGA1700 socket currently in use on Alder Lake. In fact, we can hope that the current cooling systems are compatible with this new socket.

Be careful though, according to the leaked documents, the IHS (Integrated Heat Spreader) would be a bit different. Going from 6.73 – 7.4 mm to 6.83 – 7.49 mm, it could require a change in the fastening system or more special attention when setting it up.

Recall that in addition to Alder Lake, Intel will use the LGA1700 socket on the next generation, Raptor Lake, to come at the end of the year. For its part, the LGA1851 socket would be used on the 14e (Meteor Lake) and 15e (Arrow Lake) generations of Intel processors.
