The Met Gala 2023 was themed “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”. Cats, Karl doubles and camellias were seen on the stairs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We show you the five most exciting fashion statements and their stories.

The Met Gala, a benefit event in aid of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, attracts the biggest names in fashion and show business to New York every May.

Elaborate robes, extravagantly embellished and sometimes fashioned into unique works of art: it’s the event that fashionistas look to with delight, but also with awe. How is the motto interpreted or are the looks boring?

These five Met Gala looks have the most compelling history

While many chose a fashionably safe bank this year and breathed the attitude of Karl Lagerfeld in black and white into their looks, others also resorted to this combination, but also to clearly profound pieces of fashion history: archive dresses, custom-made products and typical Chanel pearls bribed on the grand staircase of the museum.

1. Dua Lipa wears vintage Chanel wedding dress

Is this gown too simple for the lavish and extravagant Met Gala? Hardly likely. In the cream-colored wedding dress, Dua Lipa, 27, (re)creates an iconic moment and sums up the motto of Karl Lagerfeld.

Part of Chanel’s Fall/Winter 1992 couture collection, the flared tweed dress with black embroidery at the waist and hem was once seen on the runway by supermodel and Lagerfeld muse Claudia Schiffer. Instead of a headpiece, however, Dua chooses another detail: She wears the Legendary diamond from Tiffany & Co. around her neck. The 100-carat white diamond pays homage to a diamond previously only worn by four women: Mary Whitehouse, Audrey Hepburn, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé.

2. Nicole Kidman: Your commercial isn’t enough

Nicole Kidman, 55, wowed in a sheer 2004 gown she once dramatically staged for a Chanel No. 5 commercial as she quickly fled paparazzi. At this year’s Met Gala, she faces the flashbulbs. Luckily, because the Karl Lagerfeld dress from the Chanel Haute Couture archive is too beautiful to forget. The sophisticated design is convincing: fine silk tulle meets 250 pink ostrich feathers. It gets glamorous with over 3,000 silver crystals and sequins that make the work of art perfect.

3. Kim Kardashian wears pearls over pearls…

For more than 36 years, Karl Lagerfeld created masterpieces for Chanel, making him a true pearl expert. Kim Kardashian, 42, also likes playing with the rarity from the ocean: the pearls drape in fine loops around her body as well as around the unconventional shapewear – and the number is impressive! Her Schiaparelli look includes a whopping 50,000 freshwater pearls and over 16,000 crystals. 12 artisans worked more than 1,000 hours on the opulent outfit, which unfortunately became independent on the way to the gala, as she later explained. In the end, the honor of picking up the real pearls went to daughter North West, 9.

4. Jessica Chastain becomes Karl(a) Lagerfeld

No more copper thinks Jessica Chastain, 46, who chooses a signature platinum blonde to perfectly commemorate the great designer. But fans of her hair color can breathe easy! Her new head of hair is just a wig, which adds the icing on the cake to Lagerfeld’s monochrome look from Gucci in combination with the sunglasses and gloves.

5. Anne Hathaway married Versace and Chanel

Anne Hathaway, 40, relies on the skills of Donatella Versace, 68, for the unique evening. Classic tweed fabric à la Chanel meets typical pearls and two symbolic camellias in the chest area. The provocative cut and the gold-colored details, on the other hand, are reminiscent of Versace. Donatella told Vogue, “The dress is a nod to our ’90s experience together — tweed, pearls and camellias mixed with safety pins, slits and a corset.” For Karl Lagerfeld, who revered craftsmanship, a sophisticated as well as touching dedication.
