the abortion of a raped girl arouses controversy

This Sunday, August 16, anti-abortion activists demonstrated against the abortion of a 10-year-old girl who became pregnant after being raped by a family member.

At the age of 10, this little girl experienced a real nightmare, she became pregnant after being raped by her uncle and suffered repeated sexual abuse since the age of 6. " His situation is that of millions of poor children in Brazil. Her mother is gone, her father is in prison, and the uncle who raped her is a former prisoner, " indicates El Pais. A situation of extreme danger which pushed the justice to authorize abortion. An intervention that is authorized by Brazilian law only in cases of rape or danger to the mother's life.

This girl, from a poor family in the city of São Mateus, in the state of Espirito Santo (north of Rio de Janeiro), had won her case by the Minister of Family, Damares Alves, who is also Minister of Women and Human Rights and Evangelical Pastor.

Violent pressures

This case had to be kept secret to protect the minor victim in view of the sensitive situation in which she found herself. Unfortunately, the trial of this child took a political turn when it was rumored by the judge in question, who revealed the location of the abortion on social networks.

Accompanied by her grandmother and her rag dolls, the 22-week-pregnant girl waited outside the Amauri health center in Medeiros (Cisam), where the abortion was to take place. It was then that protesters brutally tried to dissuade the family and doctor, Olympio Moraes Filho, from performing the abortion. " Assassin! ", the demonstrators shouted, holding the doctor's hand.

For Fagner Andrade Rodrigues, São Mateus' prosecutor for children and youth, any outside interference in this case is unacceptable. "The difficult intimate choice made by the family of the victim of violence cannot be subjected to political, religious or other interference ", he said. "It is an abominable violation of human rights ", he adds.

Despite the pressure, the young girl is sure of her decision. As a reminder, according to the newspaper El Pais, a young girl is raped every hour and more than 66,000 rapes were recorded in 2018 in the country. An even more chilling finding since 53.8% concerned under 13 years old.
