The Acolyte features a special form of Jedi combat

There are many forms of lightsaber combat in Star Wars. Some are very characteristic, like the one visible in episode 5 of the series The Acolyte.

In Star Wars, the lightsaber confrontation is structured around forms of combat. These routes can be offensive or defensive, acrobatic or refined. They often say a lot about the personality of those who use them, even if we don’t always recognize them at first glance.

But there is one in episode 5 of the series The Acolyte on Disney+ that jumps out at you.

The following contains spoilers.

Now you know.

Two lightsabers in hand in The Acolyte

This particular form is the one that allows you to use two lightsabers, one in each hand (when you are a humanoid). It is called form ten, or Jar’Kai. In The Acolyte, it is used by the young padawan Jecki Lon when she faces the Sith. At this time, she uses her weapon as well as the saber of Jedi Master Kelnacca, killed much earlier.

This tactic will not last, since the Sith will manage to break one of the two weapons. We see the Jar’Kai form again a little later, this time used by the Sith; his red lightsaber actually hid another, smaller one. Thanks to him, he will deliver decisive blows to the unfortunate Jecki Lon, who will not recover.

The so-called Jar’Kai technique has already been featured in Star Wars. We see her in the series Obi-Wan Kenobiwhen Darth Vader has two lightsabers in hand. Anakin Skywalker uses them against Count Dooku, using Obi-Wan’s lightsaber. Ahsoka Tano is also a practitioner, as is Asajj Ventress, to name a few.

The Jar’Kai is used by both the Jedi order and the Sith order. This is obviously a relatively common and widely taught technique. The fact that a padawan like Jecki Lon uses it at such a young age, and at a very difficult time, suggests that it is a form worked intensely at the Jedi temple.

It is not mandatory to use two lightsabers to use the Jar’Kai. It can be a combination of a saber and a bladed weapon (a sword, a spear, a staff, etc.) or two double-bladed lightsabers (Darth Maul’s weapon) or a pairing with a double-bladed lightsaber and a standard lightsaber.
