The UFC-Que-Choisir is once again interested in car rental companies and their pricing practices, in particular for the addition of a second driver. A service charged around 10 euros per day.
9 euros at Budgets, 11 euros to notice, €11.40 at Europcar, 13 euros at Sixt… This is what it costs you per day to add an extra driver when you rent a 5-seater car in Marseille. This is revealed the association UFC-Que-Choisirwhich condemns these unjustified pricing practices.
In 2009, the UFC-Que-Choisir was already interested in this practice. At the time already, it was necessary to count on average 30 euros per rental (regardless of the duration) and per additional driver. Today, this service costs you even more, and can reach 80 euros per week.
High prices… For no good reason
According to the association, the lessors would not have no valid reason justifying this additional cost. Asked, Europcar indicates not to pay additional insurance premium in the event of an increase in the number of drivers. Europcar nevertheless tries to justify this practice by the “additional act” that it entails: showing the license of additional drivers to counter agents.
“A service that does not require more than a few minutes and yet can cost nearly 80 euros for a week,” laments the UFC. Several rental companies did not wish to answer the association’s questions. Just like Road Safety, which depends on the Ministry of the Interior. However, the Road Prevention association recommends changing drivers in order to reduce the risk of accidents.

At the end of April, UFC-Que-Choisir also denounced the explosion in car rental prices in France and abroad. Already last year, prices had risen by 43% compared to 2019 worldwide, and by 49% in France.
