The AirTag can pack a punch: Aldi sells a much better GPS tracker

You can no longer get the AirTag alternative at Aldi, but Voelkner does offer the Cobblestone GPS tracker for the same price. Note: The delivery time is a few weeks. According to the retailer, the product will be available from October 6th. Other retailers offer the tracker with a shorter delivery time, but charge up to 80 euros more for the device. Locating misplaced keys, catching bicycle thieves or finding a lost backpack – so-called trackers have become extremely popular in recent years. By the time Apple introduced the AirTags, Bluetooth trackers were mass-produced. Many manufacturers now offer such gadgets. However, their intended use is limited because they rely on Bluetooth. This means the range is very small.

The Bluetooth trackers therefore rely on the community: If you lose your backpack with an AirTag and a strange iPhone approaches it, you will be informed of the location – even if you are far away. Practical but unreliable. Firstly, the finder must have a device from the same manufacturer. Secondly, it is of no use in remote areas where no one is present.

In addition, the finders sometimes receive information that a tracker has been found. This is intended to prevent stalking using the trackers. This is generally a good thing, but in the case of stolen cars or bicycles, informing the thief would be counterproductive.

The discounter offers a fully-fledged GPS tracker in its online shop with a free data SIM card that can be used within the EU, Switzerland and Norway at no additional cost. This means you can find your items from anywhere without any fees or subscription. That makes it significantly better than the competition from Apple and Co.

Long battery life, waterproof

The battery life is up to four years or 4,000 tracks. Depending on usage, a term of ten years can even be achieved. The frequency of tracking can be adjusted using various profiles. The tracker can, among other things, send its location every 10 or 15 minutes, or alternatively only once an hour or once a day.

With dimensions of 6.4 x 6.4 x 2.3 centimeters, the device is very small and is also waterproof thanks to IP67. You can find the tracker via apps for iOS and Android as well as an online platform – so you are very flexible. Of course, an operating manual is included in which you will find all the setting options.

The GPS tracker Cobblestone is currently available from Aldi for 100 euros. The recommended retail price is just under 140 euros. Although the tracker is significantly more expensive than an AirTag, the device also offers great advantages through precise location even in remote areas.
