the ancestor of survival-horror officially back

THQ Nordic has announced that it is working on an Alone in the Dark PS5, Xbox Series and PC game. The screenwriter of Amnesia and Soma is writing and the design of the monsters has been entrusted to a collaborator of Guillermo Del Toro.

The rumor of an Alone in the Dark return was well founded. The precursor to survival-horror is making a comeback with a trailer, images and a few gameplay extracts.

The great return of Alone in the Dark

Ready to reinvest the Derceto mansion? It would be better because this “new” Alone in the Dark will not be a completely new episode… The title published by THQ Nordic, which now owns the license, is described as a revisit of Frédérick Raynal’s game. “Rediscover Derceto’s mansion in this AITD revisit, a true love letter to the 90s horror classic” summarizes the Steam sheet.

The overall storyline will remain the same but has been reworked by Mikael Hedberg, the writer behind Amnesia and SOMA.

In the Deep South of the United States during the 1920s, Emily Hartwood’s uncle disappeared. Accompanied by the private detective Edward Carnby, she goes looking for him in the manor of Derceto, a mental asylum where… something is lurking. You will encounter strange occupants, nightmarish kingdoms, dangerous monsters, and uncover an evil conspiracy. At the confluence of reality, mystery and madness, the adventure that awaits you risks undermining your certainties. Who are you going to trust, what are you going to believe, and what are you going to do next?

The game is developed by Pieces Interactive (Magicka 2, Titan Quest: Atlantis…) with the help of Jason Kohnen on the music, and Guy Davis on the character design of the monsters. The latter worked with director Guillermo Del Toro on Pacific Rim and Crimson Peak.

Some gameplay snippets

For the moment, THQ Nordic has not ventured to give a release date and we can understand why. The gameplay snippets below show a game in its pre-alpha version, so far from finished. We see that Alone in the Dark has in any case opted for a shoulder view, like the remake of Resident Evil 2.
