Two years after their launch, the processors imagined by Apple are evolving and are even more ambitious.

Presented during the WWDC, about two weeks ago, the Apple M2 foreshadows what will be the future of the Mac. A future that increases the maximum number of cores, the amount of onboard RAM and of which we have a first glimpse of performance.

Between 10 and 20% faster than the M1

During its conference, Apple logically mentioned some results and in particular highlighted 40% faster editing in Final Cut Pro for the new M2-based MacBook Air.

Today there is no question of measurements ordered by Apple and even if Geekbench is not the most interesting test software, it gives an additional idea of ​​​​the power of the M2 chip.

With 1,919 points in single-core and 8,920 points in multi-corethe M2 clocked at 3.49 GHz is thus respectively 11.56% and 19.45% faster than the M1 at a frequency of 3.2 GHz.

In another register, we also note that in single core, only the Core i9-12900K and its twin Core i9-12900KF are able to dominate – and still by a hair – the Apple M2 on the supply side Intel.

A few mourners have pointed out that the Apple M2 won’t be able to top the M1 Pro and M1 Max. It’s true. However, it should be noted that this is not at all the objective of Apple.

The M2 is clearly intended to replace the “simple” M1 and even if Apple has not announced anything like this yet, it’s a safe bet that the M2 will evolve as the M1 did in its time.

If all goes as planned – it’s not Apple’s habit to put the cart before the horse – we should see the first chips coming out of the new MacBook Air and Mac Book Pro.

The two machines are scheduled for next month and it is more than likely to see Apple then decline its M2 on other products in the iPad or Mac Mini ranges.
