This Saturday, July 23, the National Assembly voted in first reading the abolition of the audiovisual license fee, despite the opposition of the deputies of Nupes. To compensate for the losses linked to this disappearance, the government is setting up a levy of a fraction of VAT.
A big change. This Saturday, July 23, the deputies validated the deletion of the royalty fee who finances public broadcasting, as part of the amending finance bill. The vote was adopted by 170 votes against 57, during the examination at first reading of the amending finance bill for 2022. To compensate for the losses to be expected for public broadcasting, the deputies have planned a collection of a fraction of VAT.
This abolition of the fee had been announced by Emmanuel Macron during the presidential campaign. The government estimates that this tax abolition will restore purchasing power to the French, because nearly 23 million households were currently liable for 138 euros per year. “We assume that we want to remove taxes that weigh on the French. We are very attached to our public audiovisual“, reacted the Minister of Public Accounts Gabriel Attal, assuring that this measure would not endanger the independence of public broadcasting.
The deputies are torn on the abolition of the royalty
For their part, the deputies of the Nupes, denounced “a demagogic and dangerous measure“.”Democracy needs a strong, reformed public service broadcaster with fairer funding and guaranteed independence.”declared in particular the deputy LFI Clémentine Autain.
For its part, the National Rally has called for going further than the abolition of the license fee, by privatizing public broadcasting. “A great democracy like ours no longer needs a public service“, for example, said the deputy of Pas-de-Calais, Caroline Parmentier.
