A new arrival on the motor scene, Pinion has shaken up the world of electric bikes. Initially specializing in gearboxes, the German manufacturer launched its MGU in 2023 – the Motor Gearbox Unit – combining engine and gearbox in a single block. Semi-automatic, this VAE motor will soon become fully automatic, the brand announced, without physical intervention.

Automatic at update

The Pinion MGU will thus become a real rival to the French Valeo Cyclee with Effigear gearbox. Because today, it can only automatically change gears in cruising mode – either at constant speed – or when stationary at a pre-selected speed. These functions are practical for maintaining the same pace on hills or for restarting at a green light. However, you had to shift gears manually while accelerating. A simple update will improve the system, via Smart.Shift mode.

Whether the 9 or 12 speed versions, the Pinion MGU will have four functions: manual, Pre.Select (semi-automatic), Start.Select (selection of a gear to downshift at a red light) and Smart.Shift ( automatic). No intervention therefore, everything will be done remotely. All equipped electric bikes will therefore be able to include this new auto mode.

The Pinion automatic transmission engine arrives this summer

However, the update only arrives “during the 3rd quarter of 2024”. Pinion will unveil it during the major Eurobike 2024 show, at the beginning of July. However, electric bikes equipped with the Pinion MGU motor are mainly German, Austrian or Swiss: Kettler, i:SY, Bulls, Tout Terrain, Simplon, Pegasus, Rotwild or even Flyer.
