“The Bachelorette” confession: “There is already a man in my life”

“The Bachelorette” celebrates its 10th anniversary with Jenny. We review the first episode – with all the ups and downs.

“The Bachelorette” is back! Digitally for a week now, analogously the first episode started on Wednesday, July 12th on RTL. If you missed it, the: the link to RTL+ suggested, because the following lines want to review what we were actually allowed to experience there. Of course, I look at the whole thing from a purely professional point of view, similar to “Multirole” from Twitter:

“You don’t have to be ashamed of it”

But back to the real thing: The eponymous “Bachelorette” is called Jennifer Saro this year and is a content creator. In fact, she has the great honor of starring in the anniversary season. Yes, “The Bachelorette” has been around for ten years now – time is running! And not only this fact highlights the new episodes from the past: Jennifer “Jenny” Saro is a single mother. How she introduces viewers to this fact says a lot about our society: “I’ve had sex for the last few years – even though I didn’t have a boyfriend.”

Now you can say: She didn’t mean it that seriously, it was certainly meant as a comment and was intended to reflect the absurd attitude of society that women should be chaste if they’re not in a relationship. Might be. But would a man in her place even think of saying something similar? “I had sex.” – “But how, you don’t have a girlfriend?” is hardly a dialogue that would take place between two heterosexual men.

But Jenny puts other things right: You don’t have to be ashamed of being a single mother – and “is still a desirable woman”. Can we please all underline that several times?

Pregnancy wasn’t always easy

Before we get to the inevitable other part of “The Bachelorette” (the men…), it’s important to me at this point to give this woman even more space for her story. Because it is an important story that is so often told silently in our society. She used contraception and still got pregnant, but it quickly became clear to the man that he would not take any responsibility. “I don’t wish anyone to be pregnant alone, it’s just not nice,” the Bachelorette recalled at the time.

“When I cried with happiness, I was alone. When I worried, I was alone. The whole pregnancy was alone, even with all the fears.” You want to exchange ideas in such a situation, look at pictures together and say: “Hey, that’s our child that’s growing right now.” But Jenny is no longer alone with her now one-year-old son: her best friend is a great support to her and takes care of the child during the filming on location and her mother has also been transferred to be in the same city as her daughter and to help. It is touching to see three women who are such an immense help to each other in life. And it’s so maddening to think how a man can just evade that responsibility. Speaking of man…

“The Bachelorette”: May the cockfight begin

It’s refreshing when the clichés are turned around and it’s the men around whom a camera pans in slow motion and initially reduces them to their – admittedly often handsome – external attributes. Appropriately, in the first shot, they’re all thrown into a ring and behaving as one would expect alpha critters to behave. Ah, so heteronormative! We already know their names, we know about their muscles, does it need more?! Well, one or two pieces of information are certainly not wrong.

A few personal highlights: Kaan from Duisburg is successful with seven out of ten women “without exaggerating” and has a butt like a peach (own quote). This should make him popular with his colleagues, who quickly agreed on the question of “cherry” or “peach” – peach, what else? Adrian loves women and women love him. What he liked most about him was that he stood by his emotions and was able to cry – please more of such men, at least on this point.

My favorite: Alex the chef. This shows again that it can be quite difficult to present yourself, depending on how scenes and statements are edited together. What stuck above all was: The Bachelorette is lucky to know someone like him because he is “very special and has a lot of recipes”. There is no other like Alex, he knows that.

We also have André, who at first I thought stole wine from the hotel to offer Jenny, but no, the wine came from his estate around the corner (and hopefully was well chilled). Then there was a sports scientist who actually studied “sports science” and of course Oguzhan, around whom an exciting B-plot was woven throughout the episode…

The evening – the decision

The evening was apparently held under the motto “Hawaiian shirt revival”, at least the many men who had opted for a particularly colorful robe did not stand out as much as they might have expected.

During the course of the evening, Jenny (who is a truly adorable and clearly wearing a blue dress) was asked more than once if she was a family man. Towards the end of the event came the confession: “There is already a man in my life. I am a proud single mother.” As Twitter benevolently noted, none of those present saw this as a reason to leave the site immediately – but this fact did not trigger a storm of enthusiasm either.

“I’m looking for a partner for myself and of course there’s only two of us. I’m a good single mother, but of course I’m also a woman and I want to be desired.” A clear stance from Jenny – but what about the men? The upcoming episodes will show that.

But now the suggested B-plot: Immediately after their first encounter, Oguzhan notices that Jenny looks familiar to him and shares these thoughts aloud with two of those present. Of course, the rumor spread among all the candidates within a short time, but the good bartender literally had every further detail pulled out of his nose. After what feels like an eternity, he confronts Jenny: They matched on Tinder – six years ago! Do you remember? No, actually not. An awkward situation for all estates beyond Jenny and Oguzhan.

But the bachelorette takes heart: At the night of the roses, after the “bumpy start” of the two many, many, many years ago, the bartender now has the chance of a happy ending. Not only Twitter is very curious about how this will continue.
