If Paul Dano’s Riddler made an impression in The Batman, released in March 2022, another great villain invited himself into the film to steal the show.
At the end of the film, a disfigured figure is seen talking to the Riddler on the premises of Arkham Asylum. The camera gets closer and takes the spectators by surprise! The Joker appears as Barry Keoghan.
His appearance shocked many fans, especially when director Matt Reeves tweeted a cut scene where his face is better visible.
Has the director announced the next villain in The Batman 2? A priori, Reeves would not want to use the Joker for the sequel; indeed, the character is already well exploited at the moment by Joaquin Phoenix, who will return in Folie à deux on October 2, 2024.
Either way, Barry Keoghan is still set to return to The Batman. Asked by New York Times, the Irish comedian said that it was intimidating for him to pass after the performances of Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger or Joaquin Phoenix.
“It was daunting. But if you stay true to yourself and come up with your own version of the character, that in itself will be something new. -even, everything I do will be completely fresh and unique”he pointed out.

Barry Keoghan then spoke about his preparatory work to embody this emblematic character of the DC universe.
“You have to build the character before shooting, I familiarized myself with his universe, I built a kind of mental picture with his moods, I listened to the music he would like, I dressed like him, I answered in writing the questions that the Joker would ask himself. Then you go on the set and you let your instincts take over”confides the actor.
Will he be present in The Batman 2, which should be released in 2025? We will have to be patient before we know it, Matt Reeves being currently in the process of refining his scenario.
