The Batman: Matt Reeves talks about bringing Mr. Freeze back

At a press conference in Los Angeles, “The Batman” director Matt Reeves expressed his fascination with the villains that inhabit the Batman universe, and more specifically with Mr. Freeze.

Played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Batman & Robin directed in 1997 by Joel Schumacher – a film considered one of the worst of the entire franchise – Mr. Freeze is, according to Matt Reeves, one of the villains to whom he would like to give a more realistic side in a possible following. “I’m always up for trying to find a version of a character. So for me, it would be an interesting challenge,” says Matt Reeves.

“Mr. Freeze is a great story, isn’t it? I’m sure there is a realistic version of it, which could be very powerful and really cool. I love the fantastic aspect of Batman, but my version of the character in The Batman is very faithful to the comics, and remains rather down to earth. But it would be interesting to open up a little to the fantastic and to understand how a character like Mr Freeze could make sense in this universe”, continues the director.

As a reminder, the story of Mr. Freeze is that of a scientist named Victor Fries. The day his wife falls seriously ill, he decides to cryogenize her using equipment from Ferris Boyle’s company, GothCorp, without permission. And this until he finds a cure. But the exorbitant cost of the installation catches the attention of Boyle, who demands that Fries stop his experiment. An altercation between the two men ends with the scientist falling into chemicals that will transform his body, preventing him from living in an environment where the temperature exceeds 0°C.
